Today at the State House I attended the screening of "If Only." The film, written and produced by Jim Wahlberg of the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation, features in it many families who have lost a loved one to addiction. At one point in the film one high school student tells another to bring any drugs from home that say "causes drowsiness or do not to take with alcohol" to a house party. Addicts and those experimenting with drugs are resourceful. One of the reasons I sponsored the prescription drug drop box amendment yesterday in the substance abuse bill is to get drugs no longer needed or expired out of our homes is to limit the potential for abuse. After the screening one of the Moms who lost a child spoke passionately about what more needs to be done to fight the epidemic. We know that the bill yesterday was another step in the right direction, not a cure all. This film is being screened all over MA and in high schools and I hope we can bring it to Shrewsbury and Westborough.
